Oddisee- 'Odd Spring'

Not quite sure how we slept on this, but better late than never. It turns out that Washington-based producer Oddisee has been making albums to coincide with the passing seasons, and his latest contribution in the series is 'Odd Spring', which you can download from his Bandcamp, free of charge.

It's something of a surprise to us that the big man is giving these away for free, because these are absolute gems. Crafting long players redolent of the changing seasons is one seriously ambitious project, and the first few minutes of 'Odd Spring' left me in no doubt that he has accomplished his objective. Opening song 'The Blooming', where restless bass arpeggios underpin breezy strings, squarely sets the tone for an album that brims with hope and energy. 'Birds and Bees' features a loping funk loop with an irresistible chorus and an appropriately laconic delivery from his Diamond District cohorts that somehow makes us a feel that little bit better about braving the daily grind. Hudson Mohawke collaborator Olivier Daysoul crops up on the 'In The Now', where a pulsing rhythm section is caressed by colourful, jazzy harmonies and- yes, a virtuoso synth solo. Oddisee himself provides the rhymes on 'I'm From The PG', where he ponders his origins and his future. This is very well executed stuff indeed.

'Odd Spring' can be downloaded from his Bandcamp here. It's free. What are you waiting for?

Thanks to Put Me On It for the tip off.
