Stac

It's nice to see Stacey 'Stac' Dowdeswell getting some of the limelight. Stac was working by day as a record plugger for Kudos Records when she decided to take the plunge and get cracking on her own recordings. Whether she kept those recordings so simple out of necessity is a moot point, but it just so happened that those acapellas she posted on MySpace attracted the attention of the oddball genius producer Prod, who contacted her to suggest he take her songs and do something with them. The result of this was 'Balls Bounce', which Stac says makes her 'go a bit sweaty'. It seems Dom Servini felt the same way, as he released it on his Wah Wah 45s imprint, complete with a remix by Bonobo.
With Servini's encouragement Stac has since bitten the bullet and become a regular fixture on London's live music scene, often appearing with a 17-strong vocal ensemble (see the video below if you don't believe me). She has also been grafting on her debut album, which she has a 'weird plan' for. Apparently there is going to be a 'double debut'- one album consisting of her songs with full production from the likes of Prod, Afrosaxon and Pause, the other album featuring songs in a more acoustic light. Stac tells me most of the songs cross over into both albums and both will be available digitally. It truly is the era of choice for us listeners innit?
And what of Stac's voice? I'll spare you the usual 'Nina Simone crossed with Tom Waits' cliches, let's just say that it was not for no reason that those bare voice recordings causes such a fuss in the first place. Her voice absolutely drips with emotion and soul. Go find out for yourself.
