"I don't think I've ever sent something across MySpace saying 'Hey, check out my new track'."

You seem like quite a low-key guy, for example on Twitter you say you 'can't be arsed to follow anyone', but there seems to be a buzz about you. How do you think that has happened?

Um...I dunno how it's happened....I guess people just kind of re-blog other peoples' blogs and re-tweet stuff...and maybe not being in everyone's faces all the time means they're more inclined to go and check you out. I don't think I've ever sent something across MySpace saying 'Hey, check out my new track'- I really find it cringey when people do that. I liked it when you'd go to a record shop and discover records, you'd be like 'Wow, what's that cover', rather than being bombarded with new bands. Like that BBC Sound Poll thing- I really didn't want to be on it. I just thought 'Fuck, this is gonna be a career killer- now it's got to be massive or it's a failure'. People might be like [pulls long face again] 'Oh, Gold Panda, he's everywhere'.

I was going to ask you about that. Do you feel pressure at all? Is it a double-edged sword?

A bit, yeah. I've always been doing it as a hobby and now it's become a job. So I'm trying not to take it really seriously and try to carry on making tracks, regardless of everyone probably saying 'We want another Quitter's Raga'- they're just tracks that were made with loads of other tracks and stood out, I guess. And hopefully it'll happen again but I'm not really looking to duplicate those tracks. There is pressure, definitely, you feel like you have to deliver something amazing. I just have to make it and go 'This is it' and give it to someone else. And they can decide if it's good or not. I really enjoy the process of making tracks. I don't want to dwell on it too much. I tend to hate my stuff a lot and then come back to it a year later and go 'Oh yeah, that was alright actually'.

Are those EPs forming the basis of your album?

No I've started a whole new album. I always thought with bands and stuff, they'd release some songs and they'd be really good, and then the album would come out but it would have like, two new tracks and all the other ones that have already been released. I'm about halfway [through the album]. I'm mixing tracks with Jas Shaw from Simian Mobile Disco, it's the same stuff but put through his good compressors and equipment. It just sounds bigger, which I'm really happy about. There is a really good lo-fi kind of bedroom element to it [his music] but it's a bit messy and my production's maybe a bit ropey! It hasn't lost any of that but I'm really bad with kick drums, I just make really crap kicks [laughs]. I don't use any samples that are downloaded, like you can download a million drum samples....I just can't do it, I find it totally wrong. When I started making music I was sampling records and that's all I needed and I don't really want to change it. If I'm going to use a drum machine I want to use the actual drum machine. I've got a 909 and a 606, they pretty much do the job at the moment, as well as a lot of records, a lot of crackle. And sine waves from my old Akai sampler- it's got a test tone which you can make kicks and clicks with. I like mucking around really.

When will we be seeing the album?

I think the single will be ready for April, maybe the album in summer. I dunno yet, it's not finished and I don't want to be forced to put out an album. When it's ready, we'll put it out.
