"I find the stuff in the middle a bit wrong..."
And is there anyone who is inspiring you at the moment?
I like anything on that Raster Noton label- it's a German label, quite heavy. I think it's the best electronic label for a long time. I really thought Warp would be the one but I think Raster's pretty good, it's pretty minimal and cold and everything they do is really exciting. I don't what it is I like, just the whole aesthetic about it is really good. And anything on 12K- a lot of laptop-based stuff and field recordings, really well recorded, always has really colourful elements to it. It's one extreme to the other really. I really like the new Black Eyed Peas track, real cheesy pop stuff....I find the stuff in the middle a bit wrong....I guess you can just tell when people are just trying to do something that isn't really what they do. I still haven't got into dubstep, I don't know what it's become, it seems to mean loads of different things. I do like a lot of techno stuff but I couldn't name people that have really inspired me, I just kind of hear tracks that are good. There's a girl who I used to live with in Japan called Mayuri- she's quite a big DJ there, she plays quite a lot of minimal techno. I wasn't really into it but I think it subconsciously seeped into me, 'cos one day I was like 'This is great!'. I just hadn't heard it the same way before. Maybe it's like when you're young and you don't like mushrooms and then you get older and love them. There's so much good stuff at the moment that I can't afford to buy.
Where do you do your music shopping?
Boomkat. Yeah, fucking brilliant. It's making me really broke.
What was the last thing you downloaded?
I don't download anything. I hate downloading stuff because I feel like you're just downloading data and you don't actually own anything. Do you know SND? Their last album called 'Atavism' on Raster Noton is great, no bass, just gated drums, really mathematical....and quite warm as well, which is strange for stuff which is programmed in quite a mathematical way. I'll have to have a look..... [pulls out iPod and scrolls through his library]....Akufen, Aphex Twin, Birdshow, Black Meteoric Star, Byetone, Charlie Alex March, Fennesz, Clipse, Cooly G, DJ Koze, Dusty Kid, False, Ryuichi Sakamoto, Four Tet, Fuck Buttons, Gas, A Grave With No Name, Health, Hospitals, Joker....oh yeah and the first Missy Elliott album...fucking great.
