“When the birds start singing it’s time to go to bed.”

Do you ever get any unexpected interpretations of your music?
Yeah all the time, thankfully not really had that much negative feedback, but then again you don’t really know do you? People are only nice to you (laughs).
We got two reviews of the second album, where one made a point about me being jolly and in a good mood, and the other one said it was quite dark and weird. It just goes to show, it’s in the listener’s realm. I’m sure you’ve experienced it too- you have a particular mindset with your music and it just means something different to other people.
Tell me about the period of a few weeks where you stayed up all night making this album. Sounds like quite a heavy time?
Yeah…what year was it, 2008? That was a weird year, full stop- for me, my friends, for the world at large, with the end of the Bush era and the beginning of economic troubles. And a lot of friends were going through difficult periods of change and things of that nature. There was a proper weird energy in 2008 for me and my ‘world’ so it fed a lot into that. 2009 has just been a straight up party, it’s been an amazing, positive year, but 2008 was an odd, slightly troubled year.
You talk about your late night sessions, is that typical of your working pattern?
Yeah, definitely like to work at night. I’ve been trying to get up and do music during the day recently. I try and do music when I can really but in terms of when I really press on and get good work done, I’d say 11 ‘til 6 in the morning is probably primetime. When the birds start singing it’s time to go to bed.
Do you ever suffer from creative difficulties?
No I’ve never had creative block. The only time I’ve ever come close to that is when I’ve tried to do something I’m not in the mood for. So sometimes you might have a remix you need to finish but your inspiration is taking you elsewhere, and you really want to work on the other idea you’ve got. Sometimes I’ll have to force myself to be in that vibe, but it’s not really a block, it’s just more difficult.
So you avoid block by following inspiration and having a free approach?
Yeah maybe that’s how it works. I’m not sure really. Personally I don’t like to think about music too much, just let inspiration and the vibe lead me. I very much wanna do my own thing and find out what my music sounds like. It’s fun and inspiring, so I don’t get blocked, maybe if I was trying to do something for another reason….but I don’t. I think there are different aspects to general creativeness. I’m always in the mood in some way- it might not be [the mood] to make a beat, but I could walk around the house tapping things to see what sounds cool, or listen to a crazy soundtrack.
