Lone

Nottingham-based producer Matt 'Lone' Cutler has been carving out quite a niche for himself with his trademark lopsided beats (see, didn't use the word 'w*nky') and detuned soundscapes that evoke memory and nostalgia.

He makes music for your heart and your head, and recently dropped his latest album 'Ecstasy and Friends' on the increasingly-essential oddball London imprint Werk Discs. 'Ecstasy And Friends' comes across like the aural equivalent of watching the love scenes from your favourite '80s films on fast forward and cements his reputation as a beatmaker who wears his heart on his sleeve.

We still think he's one of our most slept-on producers though, so we caught up with the man himself recently to ask him about the musical influence of Nottingham and fictional girl-on-girl love.

No offence, but Nottingham isn't renowned for being a hotbed of musicians. You don't seem to have found it too limiting though?

None taken. Loads of artists killing it at the moment though, exciting times it's a really decent little scene, you should have a look into it. I dont think the location i was brought up in would have mattered at all though to be honest - pretty sure i would have got into making music the same in any place. Drawing pictures got pretty boring by the age of 9. I was always gonna get into tunes I think.

There seems to be a loved-up vibe to 'Ecstacy And Friends', at least in the song titles. Is there a particular reason for this....?

Yeah, i just wanted to make the most joyous, beautiful collection of music I was capable of at the time. A sort of extension of what I did on the last record. For me, music has always been about escaping the every day bullshit that gets me down, good music always gets me through bad times. So, naturally, the stuff I make for myself is always going to be something joyous.

You compared 'Lemurian' to a soundtrack to an imaginary summer. What would your new album be the soundtrack to?

It's a document, this record.. kind of like diary entries of the summer it was made in. Like, its inspired by real events and real people which is a new thing for me because most of my stuff up til now has been purely inspired by imaginary things.
